He is one of the "Three Prankster Kings" and serves as the group's strategist. Unlike Tetsushi Kanamori and Ryouji Niijima—who are in Class 5-2—he belongs to Class 5-1.
He is a handsome, cool-headed, and quiet intellectual who excels academically, though he is also an eccentric. Because he is expressionless, seemingly emotionless, and taciturn, those around him tease him for his "Three-No" attitude. Perhaps because his mother's family is among the wealthiest in the country, he loves art and antiques and possesses extensive knowledge of them. In fact, he looked absolutely delighted when the Master of Jigokudo entrusted him with a shinanban (a divination tool resembling a compass). He says his dream for the future is to become the leader of a new religious movement or to live a quiet life in the English countryside.
He is thoughtful and highly perceptive; his critical judgment and vocabulary surpass those of the average adult. While he rarely shows emotion, he has a terrifying side—when truly angry, he becomes so formidable that even Tetsushi cannot handle him. Unlike Tetsushi and Ryouji, who call each other by nicknames, he is addressed only by his surname because he does not allow that level of casual familiarity. The original text also refers to him solely by his surname.
He possesses the power of Manjushri Bodhisattva; his mantra is "On A-ra-ha-sha-no." His weapon is a sutra. He has exceptional spiritual vision; if the wavelengths align, his eyes can perceive not only spirits but also the past and the future. He is also knowledgeable about religion, paranormal sites, and occult rituals.
He lives in an ultra-luxurious apartment complex, where his parents maintain separate lifestyles in units on different floors. Shiina himself lives with his mother, who is a designer. His father, a writer, is a severe misanthrope and a classic social misfit; Shiina only visits him when his mother is away for work.
Incidentally, according to his mother, Shiina inherited his expressionless demeanor from his father.
