He fills the role of the "young boy mage"—a staple archetype in the series. Despite his youth, he possesses immense talent as a Diviner. He dislikes being treated like a child and is characterized by a confident, imperious manner of speaking.
At the same time, he has childish weaknesses, such as a fear of the dark and a dislike for vegetables. It is said that he often bursts into tears when a spell goes wrong. He is particularly self-conscious about his short stature and drinks more milk than anyone else in the army. According to Tsubaki, he is also concerned about his youthful appearance. He frequently declares—with voice acting—that he is "not a child," though his exact age remains unknown.
His parents were killed by Nohr's Nosferatu monsters when he was young, and he was raised by the tribe's chief, Fuga. He looks up to Fuga as if he were his own parent. Having rarely left his tribe's village since birth, he is curious about the outside world.
He adopted his imperious tone because his high aptitude for magic was recognized early on, leading him to hold a high-ranking position within the Wind Tribe; he strove to speak in a manner befitting that status. Although there is no longer a need for such a tone after joining Corrin's allies, the habit has become ingrained and is difficult to break. Consequently, he does not use honorifics when speaking to anyone, including Corrin or the royals Sakura and Hinoka.
He loves sweets but tends to hide this from others; he does not want to appear childish, nor does he think it dignified for someone of his standing to be seen happily eating sugary treats. He is teased for looking like a child so often that he has preemptively cast a spell on himself to blow away anyone who treats him like one—a spell of which Asama once fell victim.
