Sota Kitaoka, born in Shizunai, Hokkaido, to a family that ran a restaurant called "Kitaoka", moved to Tokyo for training in order to rebuild his family's run-down restaurant. There, he was discovered by the owner of "Tomikyu," a long-established ryotei restaurant in Ginza, where he underwent rigorous training, eventually becoming the head chef at Tomikyu.
