The shadow of war creeps over the small country of Oatland. Maurice, a young painter, acquires a gnome, a newly developed creature that can learn to do things repeatedly after you show them once. Maurice is impressed by the gnome's abilities and takes a liking to it. Other painters, however, are opposed to the introduction of gnomes, calling for their ban and extermination for threatening their jobs. Maurice tries to change their minds and protect the gnomes, believing in their potential for good, but he struggles to find a way for gnomes and painters to peacefully coexist.
