He won several litterary prizes as the Kadokawa novel prize (Kadokawa shousetsushou) in 1983, the Japanese "Bunkamura des Deux Magots" prize in 1998, the Mishima Yukio prize and Japanese Adventure Fiction Association (JAFA) prize, both in 2004.
