Born in Gwangyang, South Jeolla Province, in 1948. After completing his military service, he moved to Seoul in his mid-twenties and studied under cartoonist Choi Kyung for two years and Park Gi-Jeong for seven. He later set up a small comics studio and worked as a rough sketcher before deciding to publish his own work. In 1981, at the age of 34, he debuted with the children's comic book "Daddy, Daddy, My Daddy."
